Founder’s Day

PTA units in East Ramapo district have a special award for recognizing excellence in their schools. Every PTA unit in the East Ramapo District selects 2 honorees. The honorees can be parents, teachers, administrators, or community members.

Honorees are "founded" at a special ceremony on Founder's Day. Each honoree is profiled on one page in a Founder's Day booklet, and each person's name is announced at the ceremony. Every honoree gets to stand up and be applauded for their efforts.

PARP

PARP stands for Parents As Reading Partners. Each child in grades Pre-K through 6 can participate by reading books with a parent every night during a 4 week period, usually held in March. The parent or guardian will write down the number of minutes for each day's reading.

All children who participate can attend the PARP finale, usually held in April. The finale has a special guest, or unique entertainment for the children.

Reflections

National PTA sponsors a cultural arts competition that is available to all students in the United States. Students are able to share their creative abilities with others.

Each year there is a theme that the work of art should be inspired by. Example themes are "It would be really strange if ..." and "I am really happy when ..."

Reflections categories are: literature, visual arts, music, or photography.

Participation in the Reflections contest is OPTIONAL. No student is required to participate. However, some teachers at some schools have their students prepare an entry as a class assignment, although an individual student need not submit their entry to the Reflections program.

Judging takes place within each PTA unit, and again at the district level. District-level winners then compete at the regional level, and those winners then move onto the state level. Finally, the National PTA recognizes three Awards of Excellence and Five Awards of Merit in each grade division for each of the four arts areas.
